This is aimed at both Anthropologist, visual practitioners and beyond. Organised by the Institute of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology, University of Warsaw and Stowarzyszenie “Pracownia Etnograficzna”.

A day workshop aims to encourage the use of visual practice such as photography in social research and the dissemination of data. It aims to encourage practical and analytical skills in order to create photographic narratives and how to write an ethnography using photography.

The workshop is organised as a one day master-class on the 17th June guided by Weronika Plinska, University of Warsaw and Dr Marcel Reyes-Cortez a Visual Anthropologist and photographer based at Goldsmiths, London.

Session 1: 09:00-10:00

A discussion on how researchers and artists can use visual methods to carry out social research and writing. Dr Reyes-Cortez will discuss the processes of using photography in the making of social ethnographic narratives. Participants will take a closer and personal look at the production and analytical processes that lead to the successful completion of visual ethnographic narratives. Dr Reyes-Cortez will take examples from his PhD thesis, carried out in the cemeteries of Mexico City, as a central focus. This will demonstrate how other social researchers and artists can use his photographic and writing methods in their personal work and visual practice.

Session 2: 10:15-10:45

Placing theory into practice and how photography and text can enrich ethnographic writing. Participants are shown how to visualise theory, record their chosen subject matter and construct an ethnographic narrative.

Session 3: 11:00-13:00

Students go into the field and using photography record and engage with their chosen subject. Students return to the classroom and edit their work, choosing between 10-12 images that best depict their chosen subject.

Session 4: 14:00-16:00

Participants present their selected images. Open discussion on the processes of using photography as a methodology, and how to use this practice beyond photography as an observational or representational tool.
