‘Visual Anthropology. Images – Sounds & Culture’ is a two-days weekend workshop for beginners and advanced participants interested in anthropologically informed audio-visual practices, such as documentary films. We will treat documentary and fiction films, photo essays and other formats such as audio-visual installations in the context of debates of anthropological representation. Meanwhile, we discuss different modes of audio-visual representation, and elaborate critically the potential of the medium on base of more recent theories and works in anthropology and other disciplines. How can we explore and develop innovative ways of story-telling and narrative strategies doing justice to the complexity of other people’s lives? How can we document a social reality audio-visually? How might we represent and mediate feelings, sensory experiences, and the non-visible, or the absence of something? While we debate about such issues we are also having a look at many films or excerpts of films, and other audio-visual works such as web-media projects and installations, to stimulate our discussions.

Participants will also have the chance to present and discuss their own projects, or the future projects they are mapping out at the moment. Last but not least, we are also going to try out some approaches and do a few practical exercises. You don’t need to be experienced with camerawork for those exercises. If you own a camera, please bring it with you.
